Installing a HerdHand at a Solar Trough

Follow these steps or watch the video to learn how to install a HerdHand Water Level Monitor at a solar water trough.

Instructions

Step 1: Mount HerdHand Device

Mount the HerdHand Monitor in a vertical position where it can connect to a cellular or satellite signal. Please ensure the device and wiring are out of reach of livestock.

Step 2: Route Power Cable Into the Battery Box

Route the Power Cable provided with the HerdHand into the trough’s battery box.

Step 3: Connect the Power Cable to the Battery

Before beginning this step, turn off the charge controller to ensure it is not sending power to the battery. Connect the bare leads of the Power Cable directly to the battery posts. The Black Wire should be connected to the Negative/Ground Post and the Red Wire should be connected to the Positive Post.

Step 4: Tuck Wiring Out of Reach of Livestock

Once the Power Cable is installed, tuck away any excess wiring to prevent livestock from chewing on it. Tip: Use zip ties to secure the wiring in place.

Step 5: Place the Sensor in the Trough

Place the Water Level Sensor vertically at the bottom of the trough.

Step 6: Connect the Sensor to the HerdHand

Insert the Quick Connect Cable, connected to the Water Level Sensor, into the port at the bottom of the HerdHand and turn it to the right until it makes a clicking noise.

Step 7: Power On Device

Power on your HerdHand device by connecting the Power Cable to the HerdHand. Wait until the light on the bottom side of the HerdHand is flashing green to ensure it is connected to a cellular or satellite network.
